3 Foods That Are Affecting Your Child’s Oral Health

As parents, it’s very hard saying no every time your child asks for something. 1) Soda Drinks

Acid erodes away the tooth enamel and sugar gives birth to bacteria that cause tooth decay. The bad news is that soda drinks contain both.

According to research studies, consuming soda drinks for 14 days straight leads to erosion of tooth by 2.8 mg/cm². The reason is the presence of phosphoric and citric acid in these drinks. Tooth enamel is a covering that protects the inside pulp of the teeth. This pulp is left exposed if the acid corrodes the enamel and our teeth become sensitive to hot and cold.

2) Chewy Candies

Although all sugary candies are bad for your child’s teeth but the chewy ones are worse. The reason is that they’re sticky and cling to the surface of the teeth. The longer these candies stay adhered to the teeth, the more damage is caused by the acids and sugars. This category also includes lollipops and mints.

Same is the case with hard candies. If your child is young and has weak teeth, biting on hard candy can lead to a possible dental emergency, for example a cracked or chipped tooth.

3) Citrus Fruits

Citrus fruits are a rich source of Vitamin C. But according to the American Dental Association, citrus foods are only beneficial for health if consumed as a part of the meal. Make sure your child eats citrus fruits or other acidic foods like tomatoes the right way. Same goes for dry fruits. They’re healthy but shouldn’t be eaten by themselves.

This can be confirmed by a study carried out in 2008 by the National Institute of Health. The study found major changes in tooth structure after being exposed to citrus fruit for 20 weeks.
